Not illustrated.1874 Excerpt: ... of the duration of the latter, they feel softer, more relaxed, somewhat more elastic, and if the lower segment of the uterus is still accessible to the exploring finger, we perceive it in the mean time, no matter how stretched it was and how firm and close its proximity to the presenting parts of the child, more relaxed and less pressed to the presenting part of the child; the former acute angular resisting os uteri at the same time is more loose, and appears more yielding to the traction of the finger. As soon, however, as the influence of the narcosis on the proper activity of pain, after a somewhat protracted action of the drug, is gradually lost, the above described relaxation of the uterine walls in the interval of pain is moderated by-and-by, and about one-half hour after the commencement of the narcosis we shall find the tonicity of the organ in the same degree as before the employment of the narcotic. This latter exerts an undeniable influence on the forces which lid the contractions of the uterus in the expulsion of the child, and almost constantly have we observed a moderation in the contractions of the outer abdominal wall, lasting during the whole duration of the narcosis. That these groups of muscles, unlike the rest, which are voluntary, do not remain completely relaxed during the anaesthetic condition, may, first of all, have its reason in that their contractions accompanying the act of parturition represent a co-motion inevitably brought about by the activity of the pains, which at all times happens as soon as the uterine contractions develop their activity by exciting the motor nerve-fibers which supply the abdominal muscles.
